Abstract
This study aims to understand what determines the extent to which care home
managers use the care home garden to provide person centred care for people living
with dementia.
The UK care home population is becoming increasingly older with more complex
needs. Age UK estimates that over 70% of residents are people living with dementia
or severe memory problems. A review of current literature shows that the garden
environment has the potential to provide the psychosocial benefits of sensory and
occupational stimulation which can enable people to live well with dementia.
Using qualitative methodology this study used nine semi-structured interviews with
care home managers to gain an understanding of their use of the garden in the
person centred care of people with dementia. Using thematic analysis to interpret the
data, the study has found two overarching themes which are the benefits and
facilitators which influence the extent to which the garden is used. The findings
suggest that opportunities to build relationships and enhance communication,
support a care culture in which people living with dementia, their families and care
staff are instrumental in both recognising the benefits of the garden and facilitating its
use. The findings also suggest that garden use is supported by high staff/resident
ratios, the use of assistive technology and design which provides good visibility of
and access to the garden. These factors all support person centred care which
influences the extent to which people living with dementia are able use the gardens
of care homes.
